There is still plenty you can see and do to fully enjoy the experience. In this article, I will give you some tips on what to see in Padua in a two-day stay.
Day 1
Start your day with a visit to the Basilica di Sant’Antonio, one of the symbols of the city. The basilica is famous for the tomb of the saint and for its magnificent works of art, including the famous altar of the Saint by Donatello. You can also admire the architectural beauty and decorative details of the basilica.
Next, head to the Palazzo della Ragione, a medieval building located in the heart of the city. This was the centre of civic life in Padua for centuries and was used as a court, market and meeting place. Today it is the venue for exhibitions and cultural events.
After the Palazzo della Ragione, take a stroll through the historical centre of Padua, where you will discover a multitude of craft workshops, restaurants, bars and cafés. Don’t miss the famous Caffè Pedrocchi, the oldest café in Italy.
In the afternoon, visit the famous Botanical Garden of Padua, founded in 1545 and considered one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Here you can admire thousands of plant species, including giant ginkgo biloba trees, which date back to prehistoric times.
Day 2
Start your second day in Padua by visiting the Cappella degli Scrovegni, a small chapel housing some of the masterpieces of Renaissance art, including Giotto’s famous frescoes. This is one of the city’s most important tourist attractions, so book tickets in advance to avoid long queues.
Next, head to the Prato della Valle district, one of Europe’s largest squares. Here you can admire the beautiful central fountain surrounded by statues of famous people and enjoy the view of the green lawn and flowers.
Finally, to end your stay in Padua on a high note, stop at the famous Teatro Verdi, located near the train station. This is one of the oldest and most important theatres in Italy and offers a wide range of performances, from opera to ballet, theatre to classical music.
